Sump Pump Ordinance FAQs

H
ow long does an inspection take?

A typical inspection is completed in under 15 minutes. Many are complete in about 5 minutes.

 What about my privacy?

The inspector will be looking specifically for improper connections to the sanitary sewer, and will not be looking for anything else in your home.

I don't have a sump pump. Do I still need an inspection?

Yes, in the interest of fairness to all residents, all buildings will be inspected regardless of whether a sump pump is present.

Is it mandatory to conduct an inspection?

Yes, by City ordinance. A $100/month surcharge will be added onto the sanitary sewer bills of any property that does
not comply with the ordinance.

What is the inspection looking for?

In general, the inspector will be looking to verify that sump pumps, roof drains, and other clear water sources are not connected to the sanitary sewer system, or have the potential to do so.

When will I have my inspection?

Inspections will be conducted on three Saturdays (September 15th, 22nd, and 29th) and one weekday (September 18th).
It is the property owner’s responsibility to schedule an appointment for one of these days.

How do I schedule an inspection?

You may schedule your observation by contacting MSA Professional Services at (800) 844-4122, or the City at (515) 388-4861 no later than Friday, August 24, 2012.

How long do I have to correct violations?

It is preferred that the sump pump is connected correctly before the first inspection.  If a violation is found, a second inspection will need to be conducted within 60 calendar days.  Property owners will be charged $25.00 for the re-inspection.  The property owner must schedule a re-inspection with the City.  If the sump pump connection is not re-inspected or remains out of compliance, a $100.00 per month fee will be charged.
