Sewer System Meeting

The Roland City Council has a few big decisions to make in the near future on our existing sewer system.  Council members would like your personal input at a public meeting to be held Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012.  The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Roland Community Center.

The majority of the sewer system in Roland was installed in the 1920s, so as you might imagine it is deteriorating.  City Engineer Neil Guess of Bolton & Menk has given the council some suggestions of updates that should be done.  The city council wants to know where you would like to see money spent first.  The two biggest questions right now are:  Does the city want to spend money first to try and reduce high flows during wet weather times and potentially save money when it is time to construct a new waste water facility, or does the city want to spend money first to try to keep water out of basements?

The council has two main options to consider:

  • Slip lining sewers throughout town (which could cost up $20,000 per block or up to $2.5 million for the whole town)
  • A new trunk line (which could potentially cost from $600,000 up to $1.2 million)

Both of these have their advantages and disadvantages.  Both must be completed eventually, but the council is asking for your input in deciding what should be done first.  Please attend the public meeting Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at 7 p.m. at the Community Center to share your thoughts.  City council members, city engineers, and city employees will be present to explain the different options, the pros and cons of those options, and answer any questions you may have.
